Paris Information and Travel Tips to Plan your Paris Vacation

Though many have tried, few can capture in words the true spirit and magic that is Paris. The French capital has long been a mecca for artists, thinkers and writers, and today it holds some of the world's greatest museums and more recognizable landmarks than any other city. In this "City of Light" you'll witness the most romantic reflections of Paris strolling along the River Seine or gazing at the glittering Eiffel Tower at night. Highly intelligent, Paris is also an art and history buff's fantasy – from the staggering collection of art at the Louvre Museum to the pure opulence of Versailles Palace, the former seat of the Royal Court.

Opera House

The striking Opera House was designed in 1860 in the peak of the French Empire by Charles Garnier. With its stunning facade of gleaming marble, sculpture, and mosaics, the Opera Garnier is one of the city s most impressive monuments from the 19th century. Today it stages operas, classical music concerts, ballet and contemporary dance.

Versailles Palace

The "King of all Palaces" and the pride of France, Versailles Palace proudly owns its title as one of the grandest chateaus in all of France. Situated southwest of Paris in the leafy suburb of Versailles, Chateau de Versailles was the former seat of the Royal Court from 1682 until 1789. This over-the-top palace covers an expansive 900 hectares of glittering salons, fountain-lined parks and flower-filled gardens, epitomizing the imperial grandeur.

River Seine

The River Seine flows through the heart of Paris, its waters reflecting the most romantic images of this "City of Light." A cruise along the Seine, past charming quays, bridges and the iconic Eiffel Tower is the ultimate Parisian experience.

Louvre Museum

The mecca for art lovers worldwide, the Musee du Louvre is possibly one of the world s greatest art museums. Opened to the public in 1793 with just 2500 paintings, the Louvre now houses a staggering collection of over 30,000 paintings, including its star attraction, Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa, as well as the Venus de Milo, and Michelangelo s Slaves.

Eiffel Tower

Easily one of the world s most recognizable landmarks, the Tour Eiffel was never meant to be permanent. French engineer Gustave-Alexandre Eiffel built this 7000 ton wrought-iron tower in 1889 for the World Fair, and for years it was the largest man-made structure on earth at 1050ft. Criticized by the artistic elite, it was almost torn down in 1909, but was salvaged when it proved an ideal platform for a radio (now TV) antenna on its peak. Today the Eiffel Tower is synonymous with Paris itself and a must-see for visitors. Head to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view or catch a night-time viewing that s simply breathtaking.

Place de la Concorde

A gift to France from Egypt in 1831, the 3300-year-old pink granite obelisk stands in the Place de la Concorde situated along the River Seine. This monument once stood in the Temple of Ramses at Thebes (modern-day Luxor) and now rests in this immense square, separating the Tuilerie Gardens from the Champs Elysees. The place today retains the general appearance it had in the 18th century, when it was used as the site of countless beheadings, including Louis XVI in 1793 and Marie-Antoinette. After the Reign of Terror ended, the square was renamed Place de la Concorde (harmony) in hopes it would become a place of peace.
