As the capital of Austria, Vienna, whose official German name Wien, is the largest city in the country and is Austria's economic, political, and cultural center. Opera House (Wiener Staatsoper) Although the architecture was not well-liked by the Viennese, today the Opera House is a beloved symbol of Viennese art. The Opera House s first performance was Don Giovanni, an opera by Austrian native Mozart, on 25 May, 1869.
Hofburg Palace This palace complex was the imperial residence of the Habsburg emperors until 1918 and it began as a medieval castle but expanded and was redecorated as the Habsburgs grew in power. The palace now houses several museums, including the Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum and Imperial Silver Collection.
Schonbrunn Palace (Schloss Schonbrunn) This UNESCO World Heritage Site is comparable in grandeur to the Versailles Palace. Visitors to this baroque palace can enjoy Schonbrunn s splendid gardens and zoo (the oldest in the world), as well as the Habsburg summer palace.
