A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ayutthaya was the royal capital of old Siam from 1351 to 1767, when it was largely destroyed by the Burmese. Today, the burned and blackened ruins of this once-?ourishing city include broken and restored temples, prangs (temple towers), monasteries, Buddha images, and holy sanctuaries. Visitors can stroll around di?erent clusters of ruins, viewing everything from the three intact chedis of the original Royal Monastery to the legendary Buddha head entangled in tree roots.
