Day 1   |  Arrive-Beijing 

Arrive in Beijing, the starting point of our Grand Yangtze expedition and check in to our hotel where we can relax for the remainder of the day.

Day 2   |  Beijing  (AB, L)

Dive into the Beijing s extraordinary heritage as we visit Tiananmen Square, the site of many historic events in modern Chinese history. Arrive at the Forbidden City – a sprawling palace complex which served as the imperial court from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty. Walk through the majestic palace grounds and then venture to the Summer Palace, a scenic imperial retreat. Continue to drive past the 2008 Olympic sites, Bird s Nest and Water Cube, and later this evening we may enjoy a local delicacy at an optional Peking Duck Banquet Dinner.

Day 3   |  Beijing  (AB, L)

Today we visit China s ultimate treasure, the Great Wall of China, or the “Long Wall of Ten Thousand Li.” A legendary symbol of the country s strength and pride, the wall winds 4,000 miles across China s northern borders. We ascend the wall and climb its ancient steps, admiring the sweeping vistas of China s ever-changing landscapes. Continue to visit the Sacred Way, a "divine road" which leads to the Ming Tombs Museum, followed by a stop at the Temple of Heaven, a massive complex built in 1420 where emperors performed religious ceremonies.

Day 4   |  Beijing-Xian  (AB, DS)

Board a flight to historic Xian, the nation s capital for hundreds of years and the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. Upon arrival we visit Xian s ultimate attraction and one of the most sensational archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, the Terra-Cotta Warriors. Walk through the underground pits and marvel at the rows of soldiers, chariots and horses, which guard the tomb of China s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Later this evening we gather for dinner followed by a Tang Dynasty Stage Show.

Day 5   |  Xian-Chongqing  (AB, L, D)

Today begins with a visit to Xian s massive City Wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of the best-preserved Buddhist temples in China. After sightseeing we transfer to the airport and board an afternoon flight to Chongqing, a picturesque mountain city and China s largest and most populous municipality. Upon arrival and if time permits, we take a brief city tour and visit the Chongqing Zoo to see the famous pandas.

Day 6   |  Chongqing-Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

Today we drive to the docks to board our Victoria Cruise ship. The mighty Yangtze River is the third longest in the world and flows nearly 4,000 miles into the East China Sea. Arrive at Fengdu and disembark for our first shore excursion and wander through the "ghost city" and its ghoul-decorated temples and gardens. Return aboard the ship for evening cruising.

Day 7   |  Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

Today, we approach the highlight of our cruise and one of China s most globally recognized icons, the Three Gorges. Sail through the 5-mile long Qutang Gorge, the shortest but grandest of the three. Pass by sheer limestone cliffs and enter Wu Gorge, known for its serene beauty and 12 unique peaks. Disembark and board a smaller vessel to access a narrow tributary to the dramatic Lesser Gorges, gliding by terraced hillsides and soaring cliffs. Return aboard and sail through Xiling Gorge, the longest and deepest of the three. This evening we sail through the intricate Three Gorges Dam ship locks.

Day 8   |  Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

Disembark at Sandouping to tour the Three Gorges Dam site and learn about the construction of the world s largest hydroelectric dam. In addition to controlling flooding, navigation and irrigation, the dam does have a lofty green initiative – creating a major source of hydroelectric power for China. Return aboard the ship and continue cruising.

Day 9   |  Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

Arrival at Wuhan marks the halfway point on our Yangtze River journey. Situated at the crossroads of central China, Wuhan has a history of over 3,500 years and is the largest industrial and commercial city in China. Disembark for an afternoon city tour and visit the Hubei Provincial Museum to browse the rich collection of ancient artifacts.

Day 10   |  Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

Disembark at Guichi for a full-day excursion to Huang Shan ("Yellow Mountain"). Located in the southern Anhui Province, Huang Shan is China s most famous mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sheer scenic beauty of the mountain s granite rocks and mist-shrouded peaks has inspired painters and poets for over 1,500 years. (Jiuhuashan or "Mountain of the Nine Lotuses" may be substituted if weather or road conditions do not permit a visit to Huangshan.)

Day 11   |  Yangtze River Cruise-Nanjing-Yangtze River Cruise  (B, L, D)

This morning we dock in Nanjing, the capital of the Jiangsu Province for ten dynasties. Embark on a city tour starting at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial, built to commemorate the man regarded as the "Father of the Republic of China." Continue to stroll through a Qing Dynasty-style bazaar outside a Confucian Temple, and in the afternoon we reboard our ship as it heads to the Shanghai, the Paris of the Orient.

Day 12   |  Yangtze River Cruise-Shanghai  (AB, DS)

Upon arrival in Shanghai, our sightseeing takes us first to Yu Garden, a renowned classical garden with a history of more than 400 years. Continue to stroll along the Bund, an elegant waterfront promenade, and take in panoramic vistas of the Pudong s futuristic skyline. Complete our tour with a drive past famed shopping district, Nanjing Road, and then enjoy the rest of the afternoon free to explore Shanghai on our own. This evening we gather for an exciting Chinese Acrobatics Show following dinner.

Day 13   |  Shanghai  (AB)

Spend today on your own to visit the many sights and sounds of this bustling city. Take an optional day tour to Suzhou, a city with some of the most beautiful gardens in the country.

Day 14   |  Shanghai-USA  (AB)

Bid China and the Yangtze River farewell as we depart Shanghai. We can also make the most of our trip by adding on an optional extension to fascinating island of Hong Kong.
