Arrive in Thailand s capital city and check in to our hotel to relax.

Day 2   |  Bangkok  (AB, L, DS)

Thailand s capital since the 18th century, Bangkok is a city of gleaming modernity firmly rooted in ancient Buddhist traditions and beliefs. Experience the local culture of this "City of Angels" with a trip to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Board a long-tail boat and glide through the labyrinth of canals or khlongs, past boats piled high with fresh produce and snacks. After lunch we have the afternoon free at leisure to explore the city on our own. We reconvene in the evening for a traditional Thai Welcome Dinner and Classical Dance Show.

Day 3   |  Bangkok  (AB, L)

Today we explore Bangkok s rich heritage with a trip to the monumental Grand Palace, the former royal residence and the city s number-one destination. Walk through the Coronation Hall and reach the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Visually and architecturally impressive, the temple complex is the spiritual heart of Thai Buddhism and the Monarchy. Continue to visit the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, the city s oldest temple, and end our day with a stop at a local gems and silk factory.

Day 4   |  Bangkok  (AB)

Enjoy the full-day exploring Bangkok on our own or take an optional excursion to the ancient city of Ayuthaya (includes lunch). Once known as the "Pearl of the East," Ayuthaya was the capital of Thailand from A.D. 1350 until its destruction four centuries later by Burmese invaders. Drive to the former royal capital and wander through the lingering ruins of monasteries and temples, which offer a glimpse into the past splendor of the dynasties. Continue to drive south of Ayuthaya to visit the exquisite Bang Pa In (Summer Palace).

Day 5   |  Bangkok-Chiang Rai  (AB, D)

Spend the morning free at leisure until we board a flight to Chiang Rai, the "gateway to the Golden Triangle." Upon arrival we transfer to the hotel to relax for a bit; in the afternoon we venture out into the surrounding jungles to visit the Hill Tribes of northern Thailand. Arrive at the Long Neck Karen Tribe, who have lived in the region since ancient times, and then continue to visit the Big Earrings Tribe. This evening we have dinner at a local restaurant followed by a visit to the colorful Chiang Rai Night Market, where we can enjoy the local culture and browse the food stalls.

Day 6   |  Chiang Rai-Golden Triangle-Mai Sai-Chiang Mai  (B, L, DS)

This morning we drive to the old capital of the Lanna Kingdom – Chiang Saen. Walk through the 14thcentury ruins, which include Buddha images, earthen city ramparts and several chedi (dome-shaped monuments). After lunch we head to Mai Sai, the northernmost point in Thailand and one of the official land crossings between Thailand and Myanmar. We board a coach to Chiang Mai, the “Rose of the North,” a 700-year old city which boasts an eclectic fusion of historic and unique cultures. This evening we enjoy a Khantoke Lanna Dinner show with classical Thai Dance and Music performances.

Day 7   |  Chiang Mai  (B, L, D)

Drive northwest of Chiang Mai to Doi Suthep Temple, one of the north s most sacred temples. Located near the summit of Doi Suthep Mountain (3500 feet above sea level), the temple affords some of the finest views of Chiang Mai below. Continue to visit a Thai Handicraft village, where we can browse traditional handmade goods, including hand-painted umbrellas, silk and hand-woven cotton. After dinner we head to Chiang Mai s colorful night bazaar and walk by shops and street vendors selling a huge variety of goods.

Day 8   |  Chiang Mai  (B, L)

For centuries elephants have been highly treasured and respected in Thai culture. This morning we head into Chiang Mai s tropical jungles to visit an elephant camp.
