Day 2   |  Arrive in Beijing

Stepping off the plane after the long flight you adjust your watch and realize that local Beijing time is roughly half a day ahead of where you came from. Pass through customs, get the luggage, and enter the arrivals hall where your Ritz Tours guide awaits. Transfer to the hotel to catch up on some rest. Tomorrow your exploration of a whole new land will begin in earnest.

Day 3   |  Beijing  (AB, L, DP)

Beijing is the capital city of China and has a population of over 20M. Ming dynasty emperor Yongle moved the capital to Beijing in 1421 and it has retained the distinction since that time. The day’s sightseeing begins after breakfast when the bus drops the group off at Tiananmen Square, or “Gate of Heavenly Peace.” Walk through the expansive square, the third largest in the world, and enter the gates of the Forbidden City*. Home to the emperor, it was also where he conducted state affairs and the seat of power from which he ruled the nation and stands today as the largest imperial palace complex in the world. After spending some time in the Palace Museum within its grounds, continue on by bus to the emperor’s Summer Palace* and Lake Kunming, where he and his court sought respite from the sweltering Beijing heat. Conclude the day with brief stops at the Bird’s Nest stadium and the Water Cube, site of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Enjoy the famous Peking Duck dinner at night.

Day 4   |  Beijing  (AB, L)

The Great Wall* of China is one the seven great man-made wonders of the world and indeed is deserving of the title. Originally built as a defensive structure to keep out northern marauders, it spans thousands of miles across China’s northern frontiers and is a symbol of the nation’s determination and a source of great pride. Spend ample time traversing its ancient stones, descending later to retrace the steps of emperors as they walked through the Sacred Way*, lined on both sides by marble statues and mythical creatures.

Day 5   |  Beijing – Xian  (AB, DH)

Before departing Beijing the group takes a sightseeing stop at the Temple of Heaven*, a religious compound built by emperor Yongle that consists of three buildings. It was here that Ming and Qing emperors came to partake in annual ceremonies, praying to the heavens for a plentiful harvest. Board a flight bound for Xian, the capital of China’s Shaanxi. Upon arrival the group is transferred to the deluxe hotel for check in and free time. Dinner is served at the hotel.

Day 6   |  Xian  (AB, L, DS)

Formerly known as Changan, Xian is one of the four great ancient capitals in the history of China. Today it stands as capital city of the Shaanxi Province and is best known for being home to one of China’s prime attractions, the Terra Cotta Warriors*. After breakfast the bus takes the group to review the troops. The Terra Cotta Army was commissioned by China’s first emperor Qin Shi Huang to accompany him into the afterlife and features rows upon rows of life-sized warriors and horses, all waiting to be viewed in four covered excavation pits. In the afternoon the group returns back to the city, stopping at Xian’s ancient City Wall*. Tonight after a sumptuous Imperial Dumpling Banquet you’ll attend the world-famous Tang Dynasty Show.

Day 7   |  Xian– Guilin  (AB, L)

After breakfast, continue the city tour of Xian with visits to Big Wild Goose Pagoda* and Grand Mosque*. Then the group boards a flight bound for Guilin, situated in southern China within the Guangxi region. World renowned for its strikingly beautiful natural scenery, Guilin boasts mist-covered limestone mountains and the clear waters of the Li River. All in China like to say “Guilin’s mountains and waters are unmatched under heaven.” Transfer to your five star accommodations and take the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 8   |  Guilin – Yangshuo – Guilin  (AB, L, DH)

A cruise along the Li River* is the centerpiece of any visit to Guilin. Running over 52 miles in length, the scenery afforded along the way consists of wonderful idyllic rural scenery, local villages and stunning karst peaks that have been rendered throughout history by countless Chinese artists. The cruise ends upon arrival at the town of Yangshuo, where the group disembarks . Reboard the motor coach and head back to Guilin to visit Reed Flute Cave*, a natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting that brings attention to its large number of stalagmites and stalactites arrange in fascinating otherworldly shapes. Dinner is served at the hotel.

Day 9   |  Guilin – Shanghai  (AB, D)

Continue the city tour of Guilin with a visit to famous landmark Elephant Trunk Hill*, a small mountain that resembles an elephant with its trunk dipped in the Li River. The tour of Guilin completed, we depart the city on a flight bound for Shanghai. On the way into town, you’ll note immediately the stark contrast between the two cities. Whereas Guilin has been relatively untouched by industrialization and modernization, Shanghai is a mega-city that embraces growth and change. Transfer to the luxury hotel upon arrival. Dinner is served at local restaurant.

Day 10   |  Shanghai  (AB, DS)

Thoroughly modern and wonderfully cosmopolitan, Shanghai has a population of over 23M and is China’s most dynamic city. Its many ponds, mini-bridges, pavilions, rock gardens, and greenery provide the most serene environment for an enjoyable stroll. The city tour continues as the bus drives through local favorite shopping district Nanjing Road to arrive at Shanghai’s legendary landmark, The Bund. Lined by old colonial era buildings built by foreigners at the beginning of the 20th century, The Bund is a mile-long stretch along the west bank of the Huangpu River. Gaze across the river to Puxi and you’ll see the famed skyline of Shanghai, consisting of towering skyscrapers perhaps the most famous of which is the Orient Pearl Tower.
