China’s political fulcrum, Beijing was established as the nation’s capital in 1421 at the direction of Ming emperor Yongle. You begin your day’s tour with an excursion through the iconic Tiananmen Square, China’s largest city square. Immediately adjacent to the Square, walk to the sprawling complex of the Forbidden City*, where historically none could enter without royal permission. From there, visit the traditional imperial summertime retreat, the Summer Palace*. Photo opportunities follow at the 2008 Olympic sites: Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube Aquatic Center. This evening, enjoy a special dinner featuring Beijing’s celebrated signature dish, Peking Duck.

This morning, the motor coach transports you to the nation’s most recognized attraction, the Great Wall* of China. Spanning thousands of miles, the Great Wall has stood watch over China’s northern border since ancient times. From the Wall, travel to the finely decorated Sacred Way*.

Day 5   |  Beijing – Xian  (AB, L, DH)

Conclude your tour of Beijing at the Temple of Heaven*, described by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of architecture and landscape.” In ancient times, the imperial altar was built to curry the favor of the gods. Known as the “Eternal City,” Xian’s isolated and fortified location has helped safeguard its 3,000-year history.

Dramatically carved into the terrain, you arrive at the focal point of your river journey – the Three Gorges. Then disembark at Wushan and take a small boat excursion to Goddess Stream or the Daning River Small Gorges or the Shennong Stream, depending on river conditions.
