Day 1   |  USA - Madrid 

Board your flight to Madrid, the first stop in your exciting 12-day adventure around Spain and Portugal.

Day 2   |  Arrive in Madrid  (DH )

Arrive in Madrid, the highest capital city in the European Union for being 2119 feet above sea level. The capital of Spain since 1561, this vibrant city encapsulates the Spanish love of life, with its great appetite for art, architecture, dance and epicurean pleasures. A city rich in beauty and history, it offers up magnificent plazas, grand museums and handsome palaces all side-by-side with a cosmopolitan modern center. On arrival, meet your Ritz Tours representative at the airport and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure, so you can explore the city as you choose.

Day 3   |  Madrid  (B )

After breakfast, enjoy our sightseeing tour of Madrid. See the elegant Plaza Espana, bustling Puerta Del Sol, and the statue to the great explorer, Christopher Columbus, rising up from a cascading fountain in the Plaza de Colón. Afterward, visit the beautifully preserved Royal Palace*, the extravagant 18th-century residence of Spain’s Bourbon’s rules replete with 2,800 rooms. This afternoon is free to explore any way you want, perhaps shopping along Madrid’s main boulevards or visiting its outstanding Museo del Prado, whose vast collection of works by Goya, Velazquez, Rubens and Bosch make it one of the world’s greatest art galleries.

Day 4   |  Madrid - Salamanca - Coimbra, Portugal - Fatima  (B ,DH )

This morning, your tour heads for the elegant University city of Salamanca. Here, join our guide for a walk around the splendid Plaza Mayor, the 18th-century square considered Spain’s most beautiful. Also, see the University, one of the oldest in Europe and fronted by a magnificent sandstone-ocher entrance carved with mythical and religious motifs. After lunch, continue through lovely countryside to Portugal and arrive in Coimbra, this nation's capital during the High Middle Ages. Take a fascinating tour of this University town, which dates from the 12th century and sits resplendently on a hilltop. Later, continue to the religious center of Fatima, where we stay overnight.

Day 5   |  Fatima - Lisbon  (B )

One of Europe’s greatest sites of pilgrimage, Fatima draws as many as six million worshippers every year, who come to pray at the spot where three peasant children are said to seen the Virgin Mary in May 1917. Enjoy free time to visit the Shrine of Our Lady, one of the most revered of its kind in its world. After lunch, rejoin your coach for Portugal’s capital of Lisbon, spread over seven hills around the Tagus River.

Day 6   |  Lisbon - Cascais - Sintra - Lisbon  (B ,D )

This morning brings an enchanting city tour of Lisbon. Soak in the sights as we drive along this beautiful city’s squares and avenues, before visiting the impressive Discovery Monument and two UNESCO-listed jewels, the 16th-century Belem Tower and awesomely sculpted Jeromino Monastery. Afterward, thrill at a scenic drive that commands spectacular views over Cape Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and which then winds past the radiant beaches, villages and cork groves of Portugal’s Sunshine Coast. Admire the colorful bay of Cascais and continue to Sintra to view the fairytale-like, 14th-century Sintra Palace and Gardens*, where Portugal’s kings would once retreat for the summer. Later, return to Lisbon and perhaps join us for our optional entertainment tonight, enjoying a magical performance of Portugal’s soulful Fado music together with dinner.

Day 7   |  Lisbon - Seville, Spain  (B )

Leave Lisbon this morning and cross into Spain to visit the delightful Moorish city of Seville, nestled in the valley of the River Guadalquivir. On arrival, discover its landmarks on a sightseeing tour, taking in Seville Cathedral*, the world’s third-largest church, the brightly tiled Plaza Espana, Murillo Park, the Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz, Maria Luisa Park, and the Moorish-built Giralda Tower*. Tonight, don’t miss the chance to experience an exhilarating Flamenco show and dinner as an optional activity.

Day 8   |  Seville - Granada  (B ,DH )

Journey south through Andalusia’s olive groves and Sierra Nevada mountains to Granada, the last Islamic Kingdom inhabited jointly by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Absorb memorable views of the famous gypsy cave dwellings carved into the hills around the city. Then, enjoy a tour of the glorious Moorish Alhambra Palace*, its exquisite patios, cupolas and marquetry date to the 13th century. While you’re here, also visit the gorgeous Generalife Gardens*, its terraces and promenades afford bewitching views over the city. After dinner, perhaps elect to join our “Journey of Cave Culture” tour to the ancient gypsy caves in the city’s Sacromento neighborhood.

Day 9   |  Granada - Purullena - Alicante  (B ,DH )

Bid farewell to Granada and head towards Spain’s Mediterranean coast, traveling through dramatic mountain scenery. On the way, stop at Purullena to view it famous cave houses before continuing to the picturesque seaside resort of Alicante, known for its sandy beaches. Take time out this afternoon to stroll along its mosaic-patterned, palm-dotted promenade, perhaps stopping to buy souvenirs or relax over drinks at its many cafes.

Day 10   |  Alicante - Valencia - Barcelona  (B )

Your tour continues to Valencia today, famous as the birthplace of paella, as well as the lush fruit and vegetable gardens that surround the city. Join us for an orientation tour showcasing landmarks such as the historic Central Market. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch, perhaps seizing the opportunity to sample Valencian paella and other seafood specialties. This afternoon, we make our way along the rugged coast to Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city, and renowned for its flamboyant buildings by architect Antoni Gaudi.

Day 11   |  Barcelona  (B ,DH )

Today, marvel at the highlights of this high-energy, cosmopolitan city on a panoramic coach tour. See the colorful Las Ramblas shopping street, pass bustling Catalonia Square, admire the towering Columbus Monument and view the impressive 1992 Summer Olympic site. Your tour also includes stops at Barcelona’s much-lauded UNESCO World Heritage sites, including surreal Guell Park*, dotted with surreal sculptures by Gaudi, and time to admire the exterior of Gaudi’s masterpiece, the still unfinished, breathtakingly elaborate Holy Family Cathedral, known locally as La Sagrada Familia. Later, enjoy a visit to the world-famous Picasso Museum* before sitting down to dinner at your hotel.

Your tour ends today with a transfer to Barcelona airport for your homebound flight.
