The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek

Millions were killed during the genocidal regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and many were killed and buried here. Not for the squeamish, visitors can see mounds of human skulls and unearthed mass graves of the victims.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

This former high school was converted into the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge. Thousands of people were tortured here before being sent to the Killing Fields for execution. The museum was known for the infamous Skull Map, a map of Cambodia composed of 300 skulls, which was dismantled in 2002; however, the skulls are still on display on shelves in the museum.

The Royal Palace

Built in the 19th Century, the palace grounds were built with French technology and Cambodian design. There are two pagodas, the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, that are well worth visiting.
