Plitvice

Declared a national park in 1949, the Plitvice Lakes National Park has 16 interlinked lakes surrounded by a large forest and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Plitvice

The Forest

Due to the range of microclimates and different soils, a wide variety of plant life can be found in the forest surrounding the Plitvice Lakes. Trees found in here are mainly fir, spruce, and beech trees. There are also various different animals and birds that can be found in the forested area.

The Lakes

The lakes are divided into the 12 Upper Lakes and the 4 Lower Lakes. They are separated by natural dams of travertine and this accumulation of algae, moss, and bacteria grows at a rate of about 1cm per year. The colors of the lakes change from blue, green, and grey depending on the mineral content and the angle of the sunlight.
