Thailand's capital since the 18th century, Bangkok is considered the urban and cultural heart of the Kingdom. This "City of Angels" is by far Thailand’s most cosmopolitan city, but it still contains opulent palaces and temples that reveal its ancient roots. Grand Palace Close by to the Temple of Emerald Buddha is the Grand Palace, which serves as the symbol of the Thai royal family and is the most important archeological symbol in Thailand. This was the official residence of the king of Thailand up until the mid-20th century when King Bhumibol moved the residence to Chitralada Palace. Today, it is often the chosen location for state ceremonies. Built in 1877 by King Rama V, the Grand Palace compound housed the Borom Phiman Mansion and The Siwalai Garden, among many others. Visitors are required to dress in appropriate attire when entering the Grand Palace.
Ayutthaya Ayutthaya is the ruins of the old city destroyed by the Burmese army. It is designated as an UNESCO World Heritage site, and has many temples of distinct Thai style.
Temple of the Emerald Buddha The Temple of Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaeo or Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram) is the most important and sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. Built in 1782 at the founding of the city, the temple houses an emerald-colored Buddha statue, which in reality is made of jade and not emerald. The statue is placed high up in the temple and the interior of the temple is adorned with murals depicting stories of Buddhist traditions. There are many figures of religious importance throughout the compound. The temple s spiritual significance makes it the number one attraction in Bangkok, along with Wat Pho and Ayutthaya.
