The Mekong River is a major water transportation route for Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. It passes through the dwellings of many native hill tribes, each with its own distinct language and custom, including the Karen Long Necked Tribe and Big Earrings Hill Tribe.

Chiang Saen

Chiang Saen is a small town and old capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Resting on the bank of Mekong, the little mystic village offers various archeological wonders. The main attraction of this small village is its watery scene of the Mekong and the local commercial activities along the river. Chiang Saen has what looks like an endless number of rice fields that is quite a sight. Other attractions include Wat Pa Sak, Wat Phra Thom Kitti, and the National Museum.

Mae Sai

Mae Sai, the most northern town of Thailand, is known for its pristine mountain scenery and native hill tribes. Bordering Burma, there are plenty of Burmese goods to shop for in this small town. Visitors can also obtain a one-day visa and visit Burma’s border town of Tachilek.

Princess Mother Hall and Doi Mae Salong

The view from this temple is amazing and in Mae Salong is a museum where you will learn of the Kuo Min Tang’s plight after being exiled from China and forced out of Burma.
