Easily one of Europe’s most attractive cities, Scotland’s capital sits perched atop craggy hillsides overlooking the sea and mesmerizing visitors. This former medieval powerhouse has grown into a modern cosmopolis, though its skyline of historic architecture and the looming Edinburgh Castle seems to remain trapped in the past. From the cobbled streets of the Old Mile; to the New Town’s fine Georgian tenements; to the new Scottish Parliament building, this mysterious city offers visitors a truly unique experience.

Edinburgh Castle

A towering symbol of national pride, Edinburgh Castle sits perched high atop the foreboding cliffs of the Castle Rock. The hill, a glacier-worn remnant of an extinct volcano, was once the most easily defended hilltop on the invasion route between central Scotland and England. Since the 11th century the castle has been both a royal residence and fortress, and today it is considered a powerful national symbol and part of Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site.
