After breakfast, begin with a guided tour of Bangkok’s Grand Palace—a walled complex on the banks of the Chao Phraya River that was once the seat of Siam’s—and later, Thailand’s—kings. Feast your eyes on the gold- and mosaic-coated palaces, halls, and stupas; and join the faithful at the iconic Temple of the Emerald Buddha, home to a small-yet-revered 15th-century Buddha carved from jade. Later, visit the beautiful Marble Hall before relaxing over lunch at a local restaurant and enjoying the rest of the afternoon in your own way. This morning is devoted to Thailand’s most-visited floating market— Damnoen Saduak—situated about an hour’s drive west of Bangkok. After an early start, drive by salt fields and rice paddies to this colorful market, where food and handicrafts vendors gather to trade their wares along a network of narrow canals. Take a boat ride along the congested waters and wander the canalside stalls to purchase everything from hand-crafted jewelry, silks, and trinkets to bowls of noodles. Bangkok—Bang Pa In - Ayutthaya - Bangkok

Following breakfast, embark on a full day of exploration of Ayutthaya and Bang Pa-in, two of Thailand’s historical highlights. Drive through market towns and villages to Bang Pa-in, a 200-year-old royal retreat dotted with Thai-, Chinese- and European-style halls and pavilions. Wander the gardens to admire the architecture, including the showpiece multicolored pavilion built on a lake. From here, move on to the UNESCO-protected old Siamese capital of Ayutthaya. Dating from circa 1350, this sprawling archaeological site consists of ruined stupas, temples, and monasteries once inhabited by Siam’s kings, courtiers, and monks. Must-sees include the Yaichaimongkol Temple and Mahathat Temple—the latter famous for a stone head of Buddha wrapped in tree roots. After exploring the relics here, relax on a scenic cruise back along the Chao Phraya to Bangkok, complete with a buffet lunch served aboard the comfortable modern boat.
