Arrive in Yangon where you are met by the local guide and transferred to your deluxe hotel to rest and recuperate before exploring the city at your own pace.
Only just emerging into the travel spotlight, Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is an alluring cocktail of Victorian architecture, beautiful gardens, noisy markets, gleaming Buddhist temples and technicolour street life. Your walking tour unveils the best of this little-known city, view the 46-metre-high golden Sule Pagoda from outside, Myanmar architecture style City Hall, Emmanuel Baptist Church, High Court and Mahabandoola Park. Then continue to the Secretariat Building, Gandhi Hall, the Post Office, and Yangon Heritage Trust office. In the afternoon visit Bogyoke Aung San Market, formerly called Scott Market, to view its stalls selling exotic foods, handicrafts and spices. Enjoy the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset and back to the hotel.

Today you’ll fly to Bagan, often dubbed the ‘City of Four Thousand Pagodas’ for its glorious collection of age-old Buddhist temples. Your sightseeing tour focuses on the city’s most important sites - the 11th century Schwezigon Pagoda, mural-coated Gubyaukhyi Temple at Wetkyi-Inn and the gold-towered Ananda Pahto, where four gigantic standing Buddhas each face north, east, south and west. Other highpoints include the Manuha Temple and the graceful Shwesandaw Paya Pagoda topped by an octagonal bell tower. You’ll also visit a lacquerware workshop and end your day catching the stunning sunset views from an elevated pagoda terrace.

Today, travel through rural landscapes and hamlets to Mount Popa, a volcanic mountain topped by a monastery. Ascend the stairs to the top and absorb epic views over the countryside. Afterwards, take the sunset cruise on the Irrawaddy River with cocktails on board.

Catch a flight to Mandalay and check in at your hotel for two nights. The hub of Myanmar’s culture, this modern metropolis was the capital of the last independent Burmese kingdom. Get a flavor of its personality and architecture on an intriguing sightseeing tour. Visit the beautiful Mahamuni Pagoda, home to a revered, gold-leaf coated Buddha. You will also see the magnificent, teak monastery of Shwenandaw Kyaung and Kuthodaw Pagoda. Here, marvel at the ‘world’s largest book’ - 729 marble slabs inscribed with miniscule texts. Later, climb up Mandalay Hill for stunning panoramas over the city and temple-dotted countryside.

Today uncover more about Myanmar’s intriguing past at three of its former royal capitals. You’ll visit the intriguing 18th-19th century capital of Amarapura, site of the first British embassy and best known for its U Bein teak bridge, which is built on hundreds of teak piles driven into a lake. Your explorations then continue at Sagaing, a picturesque city famed for its 600 cream-coloured temples. Next, after a ferry ride across the river to Inwa, you’ll ride a horse and cart to beautiful Bagaya Kyaung Monastery, which stands on 267 teak stilts. You’ll also see the traditional Maha Aung Myay Bon Zon monastery, where Buddhist monks still work and pray. Later, as dusk approaches, head for Amarapura’s U Bein bridge to join hundreds of monks as they gather to watch a radiant sunset.

Catch a flight to Heho and travel to the small town of Pindaya, famous for its maze of limestone hill caves. Explore the main, southern cavern, which is packed with around 8,000 Buddha statues, largely placed here in the 18th and 19th centuries. You’ll also visit the remarkable, Buddha-filled Shwe U Min Paya Pagoda, built within a stunning cave. Other stops include a local market to browse for souvenirs and a paper umbrella workshop.

After breakfast today’s excursion head for Inle Lake, the highest in Myanmar. Enjoy a memorable boat ride on the lake, soaking up its unspoilt landscapes and mirror-glass waters, which are laden with floating farms and stilted villages. Enjoy the wine tasting at the local winery.

Today you’ll travel by boat to the banks of Inle lake, where a hillside stairway leads up to the hidden ruins of Indein. This mystical collection of relics consists of an age-old pagoda and over 1,000 crumbled stupas, many of which are wrapped in vines and plants, adding to their mysterious quality. Have an Inthar style lunch at a local family with cups of Burmese tea.

After breakfast, check out the hotel and continue sightseeing at the lake. The must see is the famous one-legged rowers who balance on one leg while using the other to manoeuvre the oar. Enjoy the relaxing boat ride across Inle Lake, stopping to see these sights along with some pagodas and lakeside villages. Transfer to Nyaung Shwe by boat and take the vehicle to Heho to catch your flight to Yangon . Connect with your international flight back to the US.
