Today, check off Taipei’s highlights on a half-day tour—absorbing the sights, buzz, culture, and history of this metropolis, which blends ornate temples with imposing skyscrapers. Pay your respects to the late President Chiang Kai Shek at the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall; admire elaborately ornamented temples, and visit the National Palace Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Chinese art, to see its displays of paintings, porcelain, calligraphy, and more. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy Taipei independently: perhaps sampling its enticing cuisine—a fusion of Chinese and Japanese culinary styles—shopping at its malls or shopping at its vibrant night markets.

Taipei—Sun Moon Lake

After breakfast, drink in Taiwan’s lush scenery from a comfortable coach as you journey south to Sun Moon Lake, the island’s largest lake. Framed by wooded mountains, this stunning body of water is edged by hot springs and steeped in folklore. Enjoy a panoramic drive around the mirror-glass waters and stop to explore Wenwu Temple—an elaborate Taoist shrine fronted by two giant lion statues and dedicated to Confucius. Break, too, to see the Holy Monk Shrine and Tse-En Pagoda before checking in at your hotel. Enjoy time free later to perhaps soak in the hot springs and enjoy dinner and a stroll along the lakeside.

Sun Moon Lake—Kaohsiung

If you wish, rise early to view a spectacular sunrise over Sun Moon Lake before departing for Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second-largest city. Here , take a sightseeing tour taking in famous landmarks, including the Fo Guang Shan Monastery and Love River—where canalside parks, walkways, and coffee spots draw romantically minded couples. Later, visit Liuho Night Market to enjoy its street foods and handicraft stalls.

Kaohsiung—Kenting—Taitung

Leave Kaohsiung and relax en route to Kenting National Park, one of Taiwan’s best-preserved areas of natural beauty, whose beaches are hemmed by craggy cliffs and tropical forests. Tour this enchanting region, stopping to visit sites such as the Oluanpi Light House, the Maopitou Coastal Scenic Area—home to wind-and-wave-sculpted rocks—and the Kenting Forest Recreation Area. Next, continue to Taitung via the Southern Link Highway and arrive at Chihben, a popular hot springs resort known for its mineral-rich springs, forests, and waterfalls. Today is devoted to the East Coast National Scenic Area, sometimes dubbed Taiwan’s ‘last unspoiled land,’ which extends 170 kilometers along the island’s eastern shores. Admire the striking landforms the elements have created here including the oddly shaped sandstone rocks of Little Yehliu; Sanxiantai, an island linked to the mainland by an 8-arched bridge, and the natural Stone Steps at Shihtiping.
